The summer Body Image: A Journey of Self-Acceptance
A few days ago, I had an enlightening conversation with a good friend about body image. We touched on various aspects, from body hair to the broader concept of how we perceive and treat our bodies. My friend, who is a midwife, offered unique insights into how women navigate these topics, given her extensive experience in her profession. This conversation led me to reflect on my own journey with body image and how it has evolved over the years.
For most of my life, I’ve identified as a “shave girl.” My journey with body hair started out of a mix of peer pressure and a bit of rebellion against my mum (I think) 😋. During my dance training, shaving became more about comfort in tights and leotards, and now, it's simply a habit I’ve grown accustomed to. Though, I must admit, I’m still quite lazy with it.
Our discussion led us to an important conclusion: it’s crucial to show kids that there are many ways to handle body hair, and that they have options based on what feels right for them. Hair is a natural part of our bodies, serving important functions, but deciding to remove it should be a personal choice.
The core message is to do what feels right and good for you. Even if you give in to peer pressure – which is perfectly normal, as we all have at some point – it's essential to find out what feels right for your body.
Skin: Our Protective Barrier
Our skin is the protective barrier that shields us from the world around us. It comes in a multitude of colours and shapes, can be soft or wrinkly, and bears the marks of our life experiences. It’s no wonder that sometimes we don’t feel good in it. Yet, we should also view our skin with grace, recognizing its resilience and beauty.
Taking good care of our skin is paramount. Summer, with its sun and heat, is a season that particularly emphasizes the need for skin care. Embrace the sunscreen, moisturize, and stay hydrated to keep your skin healthy and glowing.
A Mother’s Perspective
As a mother, my body has gone through significant changes. Growing a human being inside me transformed my body in ways I never imagined. I transitioned from being very sporty to a softer version of myself. This change has been challenging to accept at times. Additionally, I’ve always struggled with having bigger breasts, which has been a constant source of self-consciousness for me.
Pregnancy and motherhood have left their marks on my body, and these marks tell a story of strength and resilience. I've learned to appreciate my body for what it has accomplished, even if it looks different from the way it used to.
Celebrating Diversity
As we navigate the summer months, let’s celebrate the diversity of our bodies. Whether you choose to shave, wax, or let your body hair be, remember that it's your choice and that your comfort is what matters most. Our bodies are our own, and embracing them as they are is a powerful step towards self-acceptance.
Final Thoughts
This summer, let’s focus on self-love and acceptance. Teach the younger generation that they have options and encourage them to make choices that feel right for their own bodies. Our skin and hair are parts of us, each telling a unique story. By taking good care of them and honouring our personal preferences, we can enjoy a summer filled with confidence and joy.
So, here’s to a summer of embracing our true selves, one where we honour our bodies and make choices that bring us comfort and happiness. As a mother, as a woman, and as someone who has experienced the transformative power of life, I celebrate the beauty in all our forms and the strength in all our stories.
